The Cat’s Ear

July 21st, 2019

~ submitted by Phil Jackson

With clear skies, cool breeze, and warm –yet not scorching– weather we had high hopes of reaching the summit of The Cats Ear. We had intended to approach via Highway 4 but when we arrived at the head of the “road”, we had a good laugh at the dense bush and changed our plan.

Sticking close to home father/son Ramblers spent the past Saturday night on Crest Mt.  @man_of_ramble  ---------------------------------------- When he agree's to haul gear up to 1500m at the end of November, it's probably safe to say I have a built-in backcountry partner for life.. ‍️⛺  #islandmountainramblers

  • Matthew was out testing 4-season tents last week! @explorington ---------------------------------------- The second night of our three-day trip on the Big Den Horseshoe was decidedly warmer than the first. With temperatures hovering at it just above freezing the 30cm (12”) of snow that fell overnight and weighed heavily on our tents. I’ll admit that my Geertop 4-season tent outperformed my expectations. For a reasonably inexpensive 4-season tent it held up great under the weight of the snow. Note in the background, an MSR Hubbah Hubbah sits near-buried in the snow. #geertop #msr #battleofthetents #hiking #snowshoeing #mountaineering #explorebc #islandalpine #explorevancouverisland #backpacking #winter

@man_of_ramble  ---------------------------------------- With everyone being stuck to their home territory it's nice to see so many people looking to explore and be active in our own amazing backyard this year! I cannot stress enough how important it is to have the skills and knowledge to do so staying safe. Even being a part of the  @island_mountain_ramblers  and being lucky enough to gain experience from so many different and amazing people, nothing beats being in a organized learning session. Gaining knowledge from people that are trained to pass on knowledge is key.  @islandalpineguides  will have courses or guided tours for all
