And new food caches

And even though the area was logged, there are some impressive first growth trees

Futher inland, though, it’s boggy and the trees are stunted

A trip to the past

Two attempts to settle Cape Scott were made, one from 1897 to 1907 by Danish settlers, who gave up when the road promised by the government was never built. By 1913, more settlers arrived , peaking at a population of over 1,000, but they faced the same hardships as the first group, and didn’t last long.

William died from tetanus, at the age of 12 years. (When I passed through here two years ago, the grave marker had toppled over. Kudos to BC Parks for erecting it again!)
