January 1, 2025

New Years Day 2025 promised a little rain and cloud. Our hike was planned for 8 am; it was no surprise we lost most “will attend” members when January 1st arrived.
We started off at a good clip up the Peden Lake trail up from parking lot #2 at Sooke Potholes. Misty and chilly, we were soon warmed by our efforts.
Once past Peden Lake, the trail became narrower and we pushed through wet bush. Very surprised at a little snowfall as we gained the upper reaches of Emperor North. We stopped for a few photos and warmer layers before continuing to Emperor South.

It was easy to lose the trail while descending off. We ended up ‘off trail’ twice, floundering for a few minutes in wet salal before gaining the main summit. Chilled, it was a quick descent to the main trail and back to Peden Lake to close the loop.
Total trip time for the 14 kms was 4 hours moving, with another 40 mins for stops. Resolutions were made to continue hiking and climbing!
