Spring on Gemini Mountain

Gemini Mountain is a consistent family favourite! While Mount Green may hold the top spot in our hearts, Gemini is a close second. With spring in the air and snow finally retreating from the backroads, access to these far-flung areas is getting a little easier.

Although we couldn’t drive all the way to the usual parking area, we made the best of it — after all, what’s a couple more kilometres of walking?

It wasn’t long after entering the mature forest that we hit snow — and from there, we stayed on snow for the rest of the day.

We climbed over the first Gemini summit, passed what looked like helicopter tracks, and followed footprints in the snow left by the Marmoteers a few days earlier. We descended beyond the Marmot feeding tube and pressed on to destinations beyond.

The sun was blazing! I found myself wishing for sunglasses and was thankful I remembered sunscreen that morning. The mountain summits still held up to three metres of snow in places — but it was that perfect spring consistency: firm enough for solid foot placement, good for kicking steps, and ideal for plunge stepping on the descent.

We had a large group, but we took our time and enjoyed a fine day in the mountains.
