This was Day 2 of the Salt Spring Hiking Fest and one of two hikes that were offered that day. Nine of us set out from Burgoyne Bay with the goal of bagging two summits – Mount Sullivan, 3rd highest on Salt Spring at 609m, and Mount Bruce, the highest at 709m. We lucked out with the weather – warm and sunny throughout the day.
After a lovely coastal walk around the Bay, we headed up to our first lookout 500m up Sullivan and overlooking Sansum Narrows to the northwest. Then onward to Sullivan summit followed by a bushwhack down the west side of the mountain to a little known but spectacular viewpoint overlooking Mount Tzouhalem on The Big Island.
After a relaxed lunch, we turned our attention to Mount Bruce. We meandered by the Mill Farm wetlands – famous with local birders – then started our final big climb. Arriving at the Bruce summit via the Tree Couch Trail, we were gifted with stunning 360 degree views albeit tucked in and around a paragliding ramp, helicopter landing pad, and various cell tower installations. The adage “on a clear day, you can see forever” came to mind as we gazed upon majestic Mount Baker in the distance.
Then it was a long hike down to the cars through fields of budding foxgloves, other wildflowers and beautiful views of the lush Burgoyne Valley. The outing ended after 7 hours, 17km, and 900m total elevation gain. It was a long but good day highlighted by the enjoyable comradery of the group.
