A terrific trip on the Tatchu Peninsula – June 13-17, 2025

–submitted by John Young

After a five-hour drive from Nanaimo on Friday, with the last two hours on a sometimes narrow, winding logging road, we embarked from Fair Harbour aboard the Voyager with Leo Jack at the helm.

Where is Fair Harbour anyway?

The turn-off is just past Woss on Hwy 19, through Zebalos, and it’s out on the coast near Kyuquot, where Leo Jack lives.

After a smooth 25-minute ride we disembarked at Rugged Point Provincial Park.

We then had a short 3.5 k walk to our first camping area.

12k and 7 hours to a little bay just past Sandpiper Creek (where we had camped on the 13th)

Our camp at dawn – Paul the first one up, as usual!

The morning movement

It’s proper etiquette to dig a pit and void one’s bowels below the high tide line, burn the toilet paper, and fill in the hole.

Love this sea stack, especially in the rain!

We set up camp at the little bay just past Sandpiper Creek where we had camped the first night. We had to pack our water in to this beach, but it had a lot better sheltered campsites than the other one. After our meal I went for a wander.

We started out at 9:30, with a light rain. And cold at times when the wind caught us.
