Green Mountain

Four of us headed up Green Mountain for a look.  We arrived at the first gate just as it was being opened and proceeded to the mountain.  We drove to the snowline at the bend just before the parking area.  The road is in great shape up to the first trail, and littered with drainage ditches after that.  There’s also a washout that is navigable with a higher clearance 4×4.

It was 9:00 when we left the car.  We continued up the standard route on a small amount of fresh snow on a hard crush to the summit block.  From here we pulled out our crampons and scrambled the face on small amounts of snow and some ice.

Despite it being only 10:30, we ate lunch at the summit enjoying the view on this bluebird day.  The slope on the north side looked navigable to the col so we opted the unknown versus the down climb.  The crust below the fresh snow on this side was quite slippery and most of us slid down a short steep slope.  From here we circled the summit and made up with the original trail.

We were back at the trailhead by 12:15 – a short day, but a good quick trip.
