H’Kusam Mountain

Four of us met in Sayward to drive up Stowe Main to access H’kusam mountain the shorter way.  Half way to the trailhead we were met with “Active Blasting” signs. Disappointed, we had no choice but to re-route to the longer Bill’s Trail.

The views of the mountains were stunning, with a fresh fall of snow the night before. Our group geared up and started up the steep ‘kusam klimb’, taking quick breaks for de-layering, water and snacks. No snow until about 1350m. I put gaiters on at 1400m, around the level of the little lake.

From the col we started up the ridge to about 1500m. The group made a decision that it was a little too sketchy and late in the day to continue. Ravi tried to send out a radio message from our high spot. The winds were gusting, which was also a little unnerving in that exposed spot.

We retired to the lake for a late lunch before tromping down the hill chatting with 2 women that started about the same time we did. The group was pleased with our day, great weather, conversation and exercise.
