After a quick car shuffle the 5 of us hit the trail up Mount Finlayson starting toward our first of seven summits.Β

4 of us met at Top Bridge Park while Arrowsmith Search and Rescue were setting up for some training exercises. They joked that they were close by if we needed them. One of the members quizzed meβ¦β¦did I have the 10 essentials? (yes) and did I leave a trip plan? (yes). Hope never to contact SAR, but grateful for all that they do.

The Sooke hills trip was a real day to soak up the west coast sunshine. The winding route took us up and over Larkspur, Rick Peak, Marys Peak, Puzzle and Screen Hill.

What a perfect day on the trail! When I scheduled the trip, I had high hopes for great weather. But, as the day approached, the forecast took a turn for the worst. We all expected a cold, drizzly day, with wet brush and slippery rock. We were in for a treat!
Seven club members met at Alyard Farm for a car shuffle that allowed some participants the luxury of doing the coast trail without the commitment of following the inland route back to the cars. We started our hike shortly after 8 AM. In the dim light of the morning and in the tall trees, we had no idea what would await us when we got to the coast.

Mount Menzies Endless Plateau of Fun!
February 11th, 2023

We called this hike after the name of the feature and what we hoped we would find: an endless plateau of fun! Well, maps lie. I suppose itβs not that they lie as much as contour lines can hide a lot of terrain.

I am writing this blog for both hikes to Mt. Richards forΒ Feb 4thΒ and 5th. I offered the same hikes for both days, because at the beginning I saw so many people on the wait list, and I saw many were first timer, and I didnβt want them to miss the opportunity. In the end 7 hiked onΒ SaturdayΒ and 8 onΒ Sunday. Saying all that, I am happy I kept the two days of hiking on Mt. Richards and that I was able to lead for many that have not been there before.

The weather was dreary both days, but we got some views both days also. Lots of history on Mt. Richards with the Lenora railway and we got to walk in history where the track once was. We saw beaver lodges and freshly cut trees cut by beavers.

TheΒ SaturdayΒ group got to do some off trail hiking lol, which everyone enjoyed, but wasnβt planned. But what is a hike if no bushwalking is involved right?

Thanks Ramblers for a great two days of leading hikes.
Finlayson to Jocelyn and return (Ridge Ramble)

We had a bleak forecast but I hoped the day would still be enjoyable. With the turnover to the new year, Iβve sought trips with a “good” amount of elevation and distance to get in shape for the spring and summer. I scoffed at the forecast β snow?!
