What a day in the mountains! The Prince of Wales range never ceases to offer top-notch hikes and scrambles!Β
This was my third trip to the summit. I hosted it because members tell us that they are interested in learning mountaineering skills. This peak offers some great opportunities to practice various skills while providing relative safety.Β

Stats: according to my AllTrails recoding, just under 15km with 360m accumulated elevation gain. Total time: 4h, 25 min.
First: time to Nile Creek for 3 of the group, time as a loop for 4 of the group, time out on a Rambler hike this year for 2 of the group, and although I’ve led hikes for other groups, first time leading for IMR.

A day up Mt. Prevost to see how the Glacier lilies were doing didnβt disappoint. (Well, there was some disappointment, which I will explain further down this report).

The drive to the trailhead was rather threatening as the temperature dropped and the slush from the morningβs snow covered the highway. We had to wear our rain jackets when we first set out as the snow was melting out of the trees, but within an hour the skies had cleared and the trees were no longer dripping.

I always enjoy the west ridge of Benson.Β Even on a busyΒ SaturdayΒ we didn’t see another soul until the summit.Β
We made excellent time, and were on the summit in 2.75 hours by 11:15 am for a quick snack and great views before heading down, taking a leisurely hour getting back down.Β
Except for the descent off the summit block there was very little snow left, even in the hollows and drainages on the way up.Β
An excellent day with excellent company.
